Tips for a fun river trip:

Call - 770-945-1466 for the Dam water release schedule, due to change in Corp policy the last put in time from the dam is two hours before release.

- Keep your life jackets on, don't stand up in the boat! The water is cold!!!

- Get out at your designated pick up point. (The Chattahoochee River flows in a meandering North to South direction, see instructions below)

- Take care of your equipment, it will take care of you. Don't use your paddles to push off of rocks, or the bottom - they will break.

- For beginning canoeists - Paddling faster than the water flow will give you more control, the stern of the boat has the most control for steering.

- If you must get out before your designated takeout point:

1. The first bridge is Hwy 20, most rafters and tubers will get out here on the West side of the river it's about a 2 hour tube or raft float from the dam (canoes about half that time). Your goal is to walk up to the old cabinet shop beyond the Northwest corner of the bridge, across from the Citgo Quick Stop. Do not walk through the Rainbow Ranch (trout farm) on the Southwest side of the bridge/highway, the owner doesn't like it, and he has up No Trespassing signs.

2. The second bridge is Settles bridge (an old iron bridge no longer used), it is a nice place to stop for awhile (a beach at low tide), but there is no phone anywhere near it. About a four hour float by tube or raft from the dam. Get out on the East side of the river.

3. The third bridge is McGinnis Ferry Rd., there is a convenience store about a quarter mile East, with phones and a Subway Sandwich Shop. Easier to get out on the West side of the river.

4. The fourth bridge is the old Rogers Bridge, there is a sand dredge and boat ramp near there. This is not a public access point, no phones.

5. The fifth bridge is Hwy 120, do not get out at the bridge. Abbott's Bridge Park is about a quarter mile down past it on the left, there is a National Park Service Boat ramp. There are restrooms, but no phone in the park. You'll have to walk up to the Quiktrip, which is East on Hwy 120 - about a half mile, from the park entrance.

-Remember, lash important belongings to the boat! Secure the top of your cooler, and no glass bottles please! Leave the river, at least as clean as you found it, have a safe trip, and thanks for your business! Tubers, may want to put in on the East side of the river, when the water level is high (generating). If caught in a thunder storm, the river is the lowest area around, do not tie up anywhere to a tall tree, but waiting under a concrete bridge should be ok... this is not a guarantee, lightning is unpredictable please use caution. Have a safe trip! **No non-swimmers please!
